This extensive addition/renovation in Bethesda, MD transformed a one-story 1970s functional brick modern house into a picturesque composition of stone and stucco reflecting the clients’ interest in the Arts and Crafts design aesthetic. First Floor additions for the kitchen and garage/guest suite, along with a partial second-story addition to the main house, created an eclectic home that took advantage of the beautiful wooded views and steeply sloping site.

Kitchen - The one-story kitchen addition reflects the client’s interest in warm wood, hand-made tile, exposed rough ceiling beams and stone. The tall, articulated ceiling brings light and warmth to a large kitchen and island and breakfast area with expansive views towards the rear of the site.
Living Room - The complex roof and ceiling line created a more intimate sitting area and opportunity to add a fireplace in the corner of the great room.
Great Room - The partial second floor, containing the primary suite and small office, is reached by a new hand-crafted stairs, with views of the wooded site from the landings half way up and on the second floor. The Great Room is capped by a butterfly-shaped ceiling.
